A teacher of Jagannath University (JnU) has been terminated over charges of sexually harassing a female student of his department.

Associate Professor of mass communication and journalism department Mir Mosharraf Hossain alias Rajib Mir was terminated after a meeting by the 74th syndicate of the university on Sunday, the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mijanur Rahman said.

The VC said the decision was made according to the final report of the anti-sexual harassment cell and two other teachers were also given show cause notices in two separate cases after the meeting.

“The syndicate made the decision so that someone does not repeat the heinous activity in the future,” he added.

The female student accused Rajib Mir of sexual harassment along with a few other charges on April 5 last year.

Following the allegation a five-member probe committee led by the university’s Treasurer Selim Bhuiyan was formed the same year to investigate the allegations.

In April last year, the authorities temporarily suspended Rajib Mir after a fact-finding committee found that the allegations were primarily proved, the VC said.

The committee submitted the final report to the VC on April 12 this year in which Rajib Mir was found guilty of the charges.

Two other teachers who received show cause notice are Md Abdul Halim Pramanik, an associate professor of theatre department who was accused of sexual harassment and Nasir Uddin Ahmed, associate professor of English department who was accused of plagiarism.

The allegations against the two were proved by the university’s fact-finding committee.

Abdul Halim Pramanik, chairman of theatre department and Helena Ferdousi, chairperson of mass communication and journalism department were in the anti sexual harrasment cell.
