Published on: 8:48 pm - Tuesday | August 9, 2016

A seminar on the Bengali classical dance tradition of Gaudiya Nritya was held at the Seminar Room of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Saturday. The event, organised by the academy, was attended by Mahua Mukherjee, a noted Indian dancer-researcher credited with reconstructing the dance genre.

Among others, BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky, and dancers Shamim Ara Nipa, Deepa Khandokar, Amanul Haq, Rahija Khanom Jhunu, Shukla Sarkar, and Kabirul Islam Ratan were also present on the occasion. In her speech, Mahua Mukherjee talked about aspects related to Gaudiya Nritya, a dance tradition exclusive to the region. She also talked about her 40 years of experience as a researcher of Gaudiya dance.

She observed that despite Gaudiya Nritya’s being an inseparable part of Bengali cultural heritage, it has long been neglected for various reasons. She stressed the need for its preservation and promotion. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has organised a workshop on the dance genre at the Music and Dance Centre. Mahua Mukherjee will conduct the workshop which will begin today and end on August 12. – See more at:
