Suspected militant in Avijit murder case held

Members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) on Sunday claimed to have arrested an alleged militant accused in connection with the killing of blogger and writer Avijit Roy.

Mojammel Hossain alias Saimun, chief of media wing and intelligent wing of the banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam, was arrested from Baunia area of Uttara in the capital last night, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Masudur Rahman said today.

Tipped off, a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the DMP launched a drive in the area yesterday and arrested him, he said.

Saimun has involvement in blogger Avijit murder and the other accused in the murder will be arrested soon after placing him on remand, he added.

Avijit, son of noted physicist Ajoy Roy and founder of Mukto-Mona blog, was hacked to death, and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya was injured as unidentified killers attacked them with meat cleavers near TSC on the Dhaka University Campus on February 26 in 2015.
