A Rohingya man was killed during a gunfight between two gangs of dacoits at a Rohingya camp in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Thursday.

The incident took place in Nayapara around 4am on Thursday, said Teknaf Police Station OC Ranjit Kumar Barua.

Police have identified the dead robber as Hossain Ali, 32, who was locally known as ‘Bailla Dakat’. He was the son of Mohammad Salam, who resides in the Nayapara camp.

The arrestees are two brothers: 35-year-old Abdur Razzaque and 31-year-old Abdus Salam, said OC Barua, adding that both parties were robbers and it was an infighting that left Ali dead, reports

The three are named in multiple cases filed with Teknaf police, he added.

Police recovered Ali’s body. Razzaque and Salam were arrested in police raids on the camp.

Another robber, Nurul Alam, was injured in the gunfight but managed to flee sensing the presence of police. He is a suspect in a case over a robbery of firearms from an Ansar barrack in the camp, according to the OC.

Ali and his accomplices had abducted Razzaque a week ago, he said.

Razzaque managed to flee, ganged up with his followers and attacked Ali out of vengeance, the OC said describing how the gunfight had erupted.

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
