Five hurt in clashes with police

Law enforcers yesterday foiled a demonstration of several hundred youths at the city’s Bangla Motor intersection as they were marching towards the Prime Minister Office to submit a memorandum seeking a raise to entry age limit for public service.

When the students advanced to Bangla Motor intersection from Shahbagh area, police charged baton to disperse them, leaving five people injured. Of them three were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).They demanded that the upper age limit for entering the government job should be raised to 35 years. More than 300 students of different universities and colleges staged demonstration in front of National Museum at Shahbagh area around 10:30am to press home the demand.

Around 11:30 am, they brought out a procession from the area, disrupting traffic movement on the busy road. Police also detained 15 protesters from the spot. Abul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said police detained some students from the procession as they tried to block the road.
