Student among 2 killed, 15 hurt in road accident

Two people including a college student were killed and 15 other injured when a bus turned turtle in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Ashiq, 22, a student of Gopalganj Polytechnic Institute, and a retired police member Ruku Molla, 65.

Meanwhile, students blocked the highway for four hours and vandalised a number of vehicles protesting the accident.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station OC Monirul Islam said the bus skidded off the road and turned turtle as the driver lost his control over the steering at about 9:30am, leaving Ashiq dead on the spot and 16 others wounded.

Of the injured, Ruku died on way to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.

Angered by the accident, students of Polytechnic Institute put up barricade on the on a stretch of three kilometer area on Dhaka-Khulna highway and vandalised the bus and a number of vehicles.

A chase and counter chase was taken place when police intercepted the students.

Traffic became normal as the students removed the barricade after four hours.

Meanwhile, Gopalganj district bus owners association stopped plying buses on all routes in the district protesting the vandalisation.
