Contesting candidates to the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election have fully geared up their campaign on the last day of campaigning on Sunday with the hope of getting maximum support from the electorates.

All the contenders including the mayoral ones are seen moving door to door from early morning to midnight. There are no places where the candidates are not visiting.

The city is now agog with hectic activities of the candidates, eyeing the coveted mayoral post and those of councilors including the women reserved ones in the election scheduled to be held on May 15.

Braving the heat wave now sweeping over the country’s Southwestern region, Talukdar Abdul Khaleque along with ex-RCC mayor and Rajshahi city unit AL president AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, vice-president Nowsher Ali, Rajshahi AL leader advocate Aslam Sarkar, Robiul Alam, central AL leader Kamal Hossain, among others, sought votes to the people in different parts of the city in favour of AL backed mayoral candidate Talukdar Abdul Khaleque.

BNP backed candidate Nazrul Islam Manju, BNP leaders Shahruzzaman Murtoza,  Sekendar Ali Dalim, Shafiqul Alam Mona and Principal Tariqul Islam, among others, moved from door to door, seeking votes  for the mayor aspirant of Khulna City Corporation Nazrul Islam Manju.

Besides, Jatiya Party (Ershad) joint secretary general Shafiqul Islam Modhu took part in electioneering for JP backed mayoral candidate Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq at different localities in the city. Other two candidates Mowlana Muzammel Haque (hand fan) and Mizanur Rahman Babu also are carrying on campaign in the city’s different areas.

Liton and Kamal approached the voters at Daulatpur Baby Stand area, West Zone Power Company Ltd Office, KDA Office, Krishi Bank, Shilpo Bank and other localities in the city seeking their mandate in favour of Talukldar Abdul Khaleque.

Khaleque also joined street rallies at different areas, including Daulatpur industrial area. Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) president Sheikh Sayed Ali, and Thana AL president advocate Saiful Islam, among others, spoke.

Almost at the same time, BNP leaders campaigned among the voters for Nazrul Islam Manju at City’s Chanmari, Bandarbazar, Labanchara and other areas. BNP leaders of Khulna district unit and Bagerhat and Satkhira district units were present.

Fearing probable rigging in the poll, Nazrul Islam Manju, at a press conference at his city’s Miapara residence this morning, said he would sweep the election with a wide margin of votes, had it been held in a free and fair manner.

He also blamed that police and administration has planned to make Khaleque KCC Mayor through rigging in the polls.

Brushing aside the BNP leader’s allegation, S M Kamal Hossain, at a press conference at the AL office, said it has become habit for BNP to bring allegation of rigging in the election, and as long as their candidate has not been elected, they will smell poll manipulation.

He also claimed many elections to the local government bodies and by-elections were held free, fair and neutral during the tenure of the present government.

Meanwhile, a total of 16 platoons BGB comprising 640 members have been deployed in the city on Sunday.

The BGB members also have started patrolling in the vote center areas, especially at important vote centers.
