Dhaka-Chattogram Road Transport Owners’ and Workers Oikya Parishad and Inter-district Truck and Covered-Van Owners Association will refrain from operating vehicles on Dhaka-Chattogram highway for 12 hours on Monday, aiming to ease traffic congestions on the busiest highway of the country, reports UNB

Bus, truck and covered van owners will keep their vehicles off the road from 6 am to 6 pm on Monday, said Mrinal Chowdhury, member secretary of Inter-district Road Transport Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad, at a press briefing on Sunday.

Mrinal said buses and goods-laden vehicles have got stranded on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway for the last three days, causing immense sufferings to drivers and helpers as there is no scope to buy foods for them on the roads.

The associations decided to refrain from operating any Dhaka-bound goods-laden vehicles from 12 pm to 3 pm from Alangker, Sitakunda, Mirsarai, Feni and Cumilla every day, he said.

Kafil Uddin, general secretary of Inter-District Bus Owners Association, said thousands of people are suffering a lot due to the huge tailback at Feni and Daudkandi of Cumilla points and the two transport associations have taken the decision to reduce the sufferings of people.

Huge vehicles on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway remained stranded for the last few days due to the construction of a railway-overpass at Mahipal in Feni, said Kafil Uddin.

The construction work on the 845-metre long railway overpass involving Tk 60 crore began in 2012 but its construction work could not be finished yet.

Earlier, a 110-km tailback was created on the highway from Chouddagram on Friday night, causing immense sufferings to the commuters.
