College girl dies on Tongi road

Agitated mob torched a covered van after the vehicle ran over a college girl on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Borobari area of Gazipur City Corporation on Saturday noon.

Deceased Farhana Akhter Mim, 21, was a student of XI at Safiuddin Sarker Academy and College under Tongi Police Station in the city, said Saleh Uddin Ahmed, senior ASP of Gazipur Traffic Police.

The police official said a covered van ran over Mim when she was crossing the highway, leaving her critically injured.

She was rushed to Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College. Later, she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but she died on the way, the police official added.

Soon after the incident, agitated students and local people caught driver of the covered van and gave him a good thrashing, and set fire to the vehicle, the police official said.

The mob also attacked the fire fighters when they went to the spot to put out the blaze, leaving four personnel– Md Samsul Haque, Habibur Rahman, Zakaria and Azhar Uddin– injured.
