Chased by cop, BCL leader killed in road crash

Chased by a traffic police member, a Chhatra league leader was killed in a road accident in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram on Thursday afternoon.

Local people, however, confined three traffic police members in local UP office.

Deceased Khairul Islam Khokon, was a member of the convening committee of Bhurungamari’s Shilkhuri union unit BCL.
Witnesses said, police were examining the documents of vehicles in Sonahat College crossing at about 12:45pm.

Observing this, Khokon, who was heading towards Nageshwary,  tried to drive his bike. But, police chased him.

Being chased, Khokon fell from his bike on the roadwhen a speeding truck from opposite direction hit him, leaving the student politico critically injured.

Khokon was first taken to Bhurungamari Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital following deterioration of his condition. He died on way to Ranpur MCH.

The death sparked protest creating tension in the area.

Angered by the accident, local people chased three cops who, later, took refuge at the union parishad office.

The cops are : traffic inspector Mostafizur Rahman, assistant inspector Rezaul and constable Bikash.

Later, the assistant superintendent of police (circle) and the additional district magistrate went to the spot and rescued the three police members from the UP office at about 5:30pm.

Sonahat UP chairman M Shahjahan Ali Molla said agitated mob torched a bike of a traffic police inspector and a police van.

Additional police and BGB deployed in the area to fend off further violence.

Confirming the matter, Bhurungamari police OC said the situation was normal.
