Cyber Security and Crime Prevention Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested two people for allegedly spreading rumors and inciting violence through social media during the students’ movement demanding safe roads.

The arrestees are identified as- Yusuf Chowdhury, 40, Chief Executive Officer of online news-portal Zoom bangle and Daiyan Alam, 22, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

They were arrested in several police drives in city on Wednesday night (August 8).

Yusuf was shown arrest in a case filed with Ramna police station on August 1 while Daiyan shown arrest in a case filed with the same police station on August 5.

Police also seized computer, mobile, laptop, facebook IDs and groups from them.

Cyber Security and Crime Prevention Division’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Nazmul Islam said online news-portal Zoombangla has been practicing yellow journalism and confusing readers by publishing baseless false news for quite some time now. The portal published absurd and irrelevant photos of police actions that worked as provocation to the movement.

On the other hand, BUET student Daiyan used facebook posts, shares, comments and videos to incite violence in the peaceful movement. Police sent the arrestees to court seeking 7-day remand. Their actual intention will be known after interrogation, he added.
