Former Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee dies

Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha, died at a Kolkata hospital on Monday.  He was 89.
The veteran leader was admitted to a Kolkata hospital following a decline in his health on August 10, reports India Today.

Somnath Chatterjee was suffering from a kidney ailment and was taken to a hospital on August 10. There, he was placed on life support. He was earlier admitted to a private medical centre in Kolkata in July after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke.

A 10-time Lok Sabha MP, Chatterjee was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009 under the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

He was expelled from the CPM in 2008 after he refused to resign as the Speaker of Lok Sabha even after his party withdrew its support to the Manmohan Singh government over its opposition to the the India-US nuclear deal.
