Journos besiege home ministry demanding arrest of attackers on fellows

Journalists on Tuesday afternoon besieged the home ministry demanding arrest of those attacked their fellows while covering the student movement for safe road.

Giving a seven-day ultimatum, the agitated media men also threatened to go for fast-unto-death if the perpetrators are not arrested by September 4.

Molla Jalal, Preisdent of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), announced the programme of hunger strike till death after the besiege programme around 1:00pm.

Molla Jalal said, “We (journalists) are giving the government time till September 4. Our fast-unto-death programme will begin  on September 5 if the attackers are not brought to book by the given time.”

The hunger strike will begin in front of the National Press Club at 11:00am on the day, he added.

Earlier, a procession of journalists was brought out from the Press Club and terminated in front of the Secretariat  around 1:00pm.

Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ)  President Abu Jafar Surja read out a memorandum containing four-point demands.

The demands are : Immediate arrest of the attackers and bring them to justice after verifying photos and video footage published in mass media, complete the trial of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case, bring an end to police action and harassment on professional newsmen and take effective measures in this regard, and to execute the trials of journalists’ killings carried out across the country during different regimes, including of the BNP-Jamaat.

BFUJ General Secretary Shaban Mahmud, DUJ executive member Golam Mortaza, BFUJ vice-president Syed Ishtiaq Reza, DUJ General Secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, among others, were present at the besiege programme.

Earlier on August 5, a group of youths attacked the journalists while covering the student movement for safer roads in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, leaving many of them critically injured.
