National unity without AL is a farce: Quader

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the announcement of forging ‘national unity’ without Awami League, the country’s largest political party, is nothing but a farce, BSS reports.

“The national unity without Awami League is farcical,” he said at a meeting with leaders of Rajshahi city and district units of AL at the AL central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka.

He alleged that an attempt is being made at a communal polarization in the country in the name of national unity. This cannot be good for the country.

Besides Awami League, he said, there are other parties in the 14-party alliance, while Jatiya Party is a component of the grand alliance. The two alliances have a huge following and it is never possible to forge national unity keeping this huge population outside the platform, he said.

Quader said they welcome the formation of any political alliance centering on the upcoming general election but requested the concerned not to use the two words – national unity.

Replying to a question from a journalist, Quader said the Election Commission (EC) will announce the election schedule, it is not the task of the government or political parties.

“Only the Prime Minister has the authority to determine the size of the polls-time government,” the minister added.

The AL general secretary told his party leaders and workers that the party would nominate widely accepted candidates for the next elections.

About the ill-competition over getting party tickets to contest the polls, he said disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in such competition.

AL Organizing Secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, AL Central Executive Committee Member SM Kamal Hossain and leaders of Rajshahi city and district units of AL were present in the meeting.
