3 more die of dengue

Three more people have died after being diagnosed with dengue in Pabna, Madaripur and Faridpur.

In Faridpur, a nine-year-old boy died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital (FMCH).

The deceased is Tanzid Mollah, son of Jahid Mollah from Majhkandi area of Modhukhali upazila.

He died around 11am on Tuesday.

Tanzid’s aunt Rina Begum said, he suffered from fever for three days and was admitted to hospital on Sunday.

Director of FMCH Kamda Prashad Saha said: “The deceased got infected by dengue at his own place and till date three people have died of dengue at FMCH.”

In Pabna, a college student died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital.

Musabbir Hossain Mahfuz, 20, son of (late) Golam Mostafa, hailed from Chak Ramanandapur village in Pabna Sadar upazila. He died around 12:30am on Wednesday, said Dr Ranjan Kumar Datta, assistant director of Pabna General Hospital.

Apart from dengue infection, Mahfuz was also suffering from other health complications, he added.

Dr Ranjan also said a total of 245 dengue patients had received treatment at the hospital so far, while 46 are currently undergoing treatment.

Victim’s family members said Mahfuz came to his ancestral home from Dhaka on Eid vacation. He had been suffering from fever for a few days, and was admitted to Pabna General Hospital around 3:30pm Tuesday as his condition got worse.

In Madaripur, another elderly man died of dengue at his home in Nilkhi village in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.

Abdul Mazid, 75, died around 1am on Wednesday.

Confirming the matter, Baheratal Uttar Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Zakir Hossain said: “After being infected with dengue virus, Mazid’s blood platelet count dropped alarmingly, and he was admitted to the Central Hospital in Dhaka.

“After receiving treatment for seven days, he was taken to his ancestral home Tuesday evening. He died that night,” Zakir said.

With the inclusion of these deaths, six people have died of dengue in Madaripur, the UP chairman added.

A total of 1,200 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours till Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Moreover, a total of 40 people have died due to dengue across Bangladesh. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 86.

The total number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals across Bangladesh is 7,547, according to the DGHS data.

As many as 44,471 people have been affected by dengue so far in 2019 since January 1.
