70 Bangladeshis contract coronavirus in Spain

Some 70 Bangladeshi nationals have caught the novel coronavirus and one died in Spain, the second worst-hit country by the virus.

In the number of COVID-19 cases, the country follows USA. As of Sunday, the former recorded 130,759 confirmed cases while the latter 311,637, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

Though the European country saw record 950 deaths from the virus in a single day on April 2 but the tally kept falling. New 674 deaths were reported on Sunday, taking the total to 12,418, according to Spain based El PAIS.

Among the 70 Bangladeshis, 59 were infected with the virus in Madrid and rest 9 in Barcelona, confirmed an official of the Bangladesh Embassy in Spain.

Most of the Bangladeshi patients who fell in red zones imposed to stem the virus are leading miserable life along with family members due to staying out of work.

Bangladeshi social organizations there began to provide essential materials to around 2000 helpless people.

Bangladesh mission there received Tk 10 lakh from the Wage Earners Welfare Board of the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment.

The mission has already collected name and address of 300 helpless expatriates, and the money will be provided to them soon, said first secretary (labour) of the mission Muhammad Muhtasimul Islam.

Spain has extended the period of ongoing emergency for third time to control the spread of the epidemic.

The world witnessed 1,214,620 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 65,608 deaths as of Sunday. Some 253,626 patients recovered from the deadly virus, reports Worldometer.

As many as 88 people were infected with the novel coronavirus and nine died in Bangladesh while the recovery was 33, said the country’s Health Minister Zahid Malik. -jagonews24
