Buriganga launch capsize: Death toll climbs to 30

The death toll from Buriganga launch capsize climbed to 30 till Monday afternoon.

Of the deceased, eight were women, three were children and 19 were men.

Fire Service and Civil Defence director general Brig Gen Sazzad Hissain said 30 bodies have, so far, been retrieved from the river till 1:30pm. The rescue drive is on to find out the missing passengers.

Fire Service and Civil Defence and members of Bangladesh Navy are continuing their rescue operation.

The bodies were sent to Mitford Hospital.

Sazzad Hissain said, “The death toll may rise. We seized the launch. I requested people not to gather at the spot as it is hampering our rescue work.”

According to local people, lunch ‘Morning Bird’ with over 100 passengers was heading towards Sadarghat from Munshiganj when it collided with Moyur-2 vessel around 9:33am.

Some managed to swim ashore.

Coastguards and river police also joined the rescue operations.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority has formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident and asked to submit report as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is inquiring about the rescue drive round the clock.
