The divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence have rescued a man alive after 12 hours as a launch capsized in the River Buriganga that left 32 dead.

The survivor is Sumon Bepari, 35, a trader from Munshiganj, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Sazzad Hossain confirmed the media on Monday night.

He was rescued around 10pm.

Sumon might have been able to breathe because air pockets are created sometimes when a vessel turns upside down, the DG said.

The rescue drive is also on on Tuesday, said Fire service headquarters control room duty officer Rassel Shikder around 8:30am. He said no one is rescued during the overnight drives.

Munshiganj-bound launch ‘Morning Bird’ with over 100 passengers on board capsized in the river Buriganga at Sadarghat after being hit another vessel ‘Moyur-2’ around 9:33am on Monday.

A number of passengers managed to swim ashore, but many drowned.
