Thakurgaon river water level rises, low-lying areas flooded

The water level of the Tangon river in Thakurgaon district has risen due to the heavy rainfall over the last consecutive three days and onrush or hilly water, inundating low-lying areas of the district.

Apart from the the Tangon river, water of 10 others rivers also increased.

Consequently, corps land in the areas such as jute,wheat, vegetables filed and seedbed went under water.

Several hundred people of inundated areas took shelter at Thakurgaon Shilpakala Academy and Riverview High School in the district town with their cattle.

Rabiul Islam, executive engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Thakuragon, said water of Tangon river increased 16cm in the last 24 hours from Thursday night till 1:00 pm on Saturday.

The river erosion-areas have been being monitoring. The department will dump geo bags to protect the eroded areas from further erosion, he added.

Meanwhile, the district deputy commissioner Quamruzzaman Selim said the district Shilpakala Academy has been opened for the shelter of marooned people.

Dry foods has also been arranged for the people, he added.
