Holy Ashura today

Published on: 10:59 am - Wednesday | October 12, 2016

The holy Ashura will be observed today across the country with due religious solemnity commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

As the Tajia procession by Shia community members on the occasion of Ashura had come under bomb attack at Hoseni Dalan in old Dhaka, the government tightened security. To fend off any untoward incident, the law enforcement agencies are put on high alert.

The day of Ashura is marked by Muslims as a whole in commemoration of the martyrdom of Hossain at Karbala Maidan in Iraq. The day is observed as a symbol of “sacrifice and mourning.”

It falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Today is the 10th day of the month of Muharram. Muslims across the world recall the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) along with his 72 followers. They embraced martyrdom for establishing truth and justice in the fight with soldiers of Yazid.

To mark the day, political, socio-cultural and religious organisations will organise various programmes, including procession, Quran-Khwani, Milad Mahfil, fasting, special prayers and Doa Mahfil. The affluent class of society will arrange food distribution among the destitute.

The state-run Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television and private TV channels will air special programmes and newspapers and online news portals publish supplements and articles elaborating the significance of the day.

President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the eve of holy Ashura, paying deep respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of the battle of Karbala.
