NCC polls: Ivy on verge of win

Narayanganj: Awami League mayoral candidate Dr Salina Hayat Ivy was leading the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls as shown in the latest results.

According to results of 142 centres out of total 174 available till filing of this report, Ivy bagged 138784 votes while BNP contestant Sakhawat Hossain Khan polled 79630.

The vote counting began after polling closed at 4:00pm. It is Bangladesh’s first city election that was held along the political party line.

People across the country are waiting to see whether the outgoing Election Commission will be able to be to pick their next city mayor through the ballot, no matter whether it is Awami League candidate Dr Salina Hayat Ivy or BNP contender Sakhawat Hossain Khan.

The NCC election was considered vital ahead of the reconstitution of the next Election Commission that will conduct the next parliamentary polls.

BNP-backed mayoral candidate adv Shakhawat Hossain Khan cast his vote at Narayanganj Adarsha School polling centre at Jamtala, Majdair in the morning.

Terming the polling peaceful, Shakhawat said, “I’ll welcome the polls result whatever it is.”

Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Selina Hayat Ivy cast her vote at Shishubag Primary School polling centre in Paschim Deubhog area around 9:45 am and expressed satisfaction over the overall situation of the polling centre.

“The polling has been peaceful so far and if the voters can cast their ballots without any disruption, Inshah Allah I’ll win the election,” said Ivy earlier in the morning.

The voter turnout, especially of female one, was very good as people were seen standing in a long queue to cast their votes. Though the presence of female voters was high in the morning, it decreased to some extent at noon.

However, polling agent of BNP-backed mayoral candidate Advocate Shakhawat Hossain at Nur-e-Madina Madrassa was found absent.
