Govt to seal fire, quake-prone buildings
DHAKA : Fire Service department will identify and seal the city buildings which are vulnerable to fire and earthquake.
Fire Service and Civil Defense director (operation), Major AKM Shakil Newaz made the disclosure at an interview to Banglanews on Monday (January 9).
“Many buildings are still not maintaining the Building Code that was enacted in 1993. Besides, many buildings constructed before 1993 have also become vulnerable.”
He further said: “Many buildings do not have spacious stairs. Besides, use of low-quality electric equipment and construction materials also makes the building vulnerable to fire and earthquake.”
“This is why fire service will conduct an investigation to find out those risky buildings, will mark and seal those soon,” he added.
Shakil Newaz further said they would take actions to remove the wires of internet and cable TV connection that are hanging here and there in the capital.
He also said fire service asked all to remove those wires by 2011 but those are still in place in 2017. “BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) or Power Division also have not taken any steps in the last three years.”
The fire service director said immediate action is necessary as specialists are suspecting a big earthquake might hit Bangladesh any moment.
